Night Hawks finish in 3rd place
The Night Hawk wrestling team had a great state tournament, and finished in third place only nine points less than the second place team Pembina County North. Two matches in the championship round were the difference. Ethan Elijah of Lisbon was leading Pembina County’s Bradyn Horgan 3-2 at 138 when Horgan managed a reversal with 10 seconds remaining in the match and pulled out the win. The other match was at 220 when Pembina County’s Michael Lafferty pulled off one the bigger upsets of the tourney by defeating Night Hawk Colbey Steeke 9-6 in the championship match.
The Night Hawks had 10 place winners led by Kyle Burwick, who won his second straight title in a dominating manner at 113. He pinned his first three opponents and won the championship match by a 12-0 score over Chauncey Dittus of New Salem-Almont. He won the state title at 106 last season. Others who placed were Mason DeFoe (fifth at 106), Carlos Martinez (seventh at 120), Cale Schalesky (sixth at 132), Alec Andress (fourth at 145), Logan Lachowitzer (eighth at 152), Ethan Anderson (fifth at 160), Issac Anderson (seventh at 170), Jacob Schalesky (sixth at 195) and Steeke (second at 220).
Cale Schalesky was still hindered by an elbow injury from the East/West tourney and was nowhere near 100 percent. After a great comeback victory that got him into the semifinals in the consolation round, he lost his next match and had to medically forfeit out of the fifth/sixth place match.
The Night Hawks got off to a good start in the first round of the first day by winning eight of their 11 matches. In the second round on that day only, Burwick and Steeke won their matches and the other six headed for the consolation rounds along with the three who lost their opening matches.
Carrington also won the dual portion of the state tourney to repeat as champs in both the individual and dual portions of the tourney. They downed Minot Ryan 62-12, Casselton 68-3 and Lisbon 57-12. The Night Hawks finished in third place. They opened up with a 40-33 win over Linton/HMB, lost in the semis to Lisbon 37-34 and downed Central Cass 34-25 for third place.
