It was so important that the School of Promise’s newest investment — a brightly colored playground now resting to the south of its building — be protected that a group of determined community members volunteered hours of their day and night to watch over it, for almost 24 hours.

Robin Welch of Bowman, who sits on the School of Promise’s Board of Directors, took to Facebook last week to organize a group of volunteers after the company laying the rubber floor of the playground had finished laying the top, blue layer, allowing it to sit and cure for 24 hours, undisturbed.

Welch successfully gained a full group of people to cover all 24 hours of the guard duty.

“The guys working on the project said we didn’t need to watch it that long,” Welch said Wednesday. “But, they did think watching it was a good idea.”

According to Welch, the construction crew had a location a few weeks ago where someone went over the fence and walked through the surface and it had to be redone.

Because of a delivery glitch, the volunteer schedule had to change, she said. Still, Welch said it was amazing to have all the support.

The Bowman City Police Department also helped out through their nightly patrols, just to ensure nothing was bothering the surface, providing an extra sense of security.

“A huge thank you to all the volunteers and to the police,” Welch said. “It’s great being in a community full of people who support our School of Promise.”

The new playground has been an important project for the school, according to Justin Abrahamson, president of the board of directors, because it will fulfill certain needs to stimulate and even soothe its young students.
