Last Friday the Bulldogs football team played host to the New Salem-Almont-Glen Ullin Holsteins. The Holsteins were ranked fifth in the state and are the top ranked team in Region 5. It was a perfect night for homecoming and football.

The Bulldogs took the opening kickoff and Brayden Jorgenson ran for a 90 yard return and the first score of the game. Putting the Bulldogs up 6-0 in the first minute of the game.

The Holsteins would counter with a 10 play, 64 yard drive for a touchdown and two point conversion.

Putting them up 8-6 over the Bulldogs.

The rest of the first quarter turned into a defensive battle with both teams having to punt the ball away on their possessions.

The Bulldogs first two possessions of the second quarter result in punts, but on the Holsteins second possession, the defense would come up big. With their quarterback flushed out of the pocket and about to be sacked by Tristen Peterson and Nate Boehm he made a short shuttle pass that was intercepted by Alex Madrigal on their own 30 yard line and returned to the 14. Two plays later Corbin Massey would pitch the ball to Matthew Carlson who threw a 10 yard touchdown pass to Brian Anaya. Giving the Bulldogs the lead 12-8.

The Bulldogs defense would keep the pressure on and force a three and out on the Holsteins next possession. On their first offensive play the Bulldogs would fumble on their own 40 yard line and the Holsteins would pick it up and run it to the 21. Just as the Bulldogs did earlier, the Holsteins would take advantage of the turnover and with two plays drive in for a touchdown. The lead would change again with the Holsteins up 16-12.

The Bulldogs would go deep on the third play of the next series but the Holsteins defender made a nice “jump-ball” play and intercepted the pass on their own 18 yard line. With the clock running out on the half New Salem-A-GU took a knee and the half ended with the Bulldogs down 12-16.

The second half started with the same defensive battle, both teams going three and out. The Holsteins second possession was an impressive 19 play, 79 yard drive for a touchdown, putting them up 22-12.

On the Bulldogs second possession of the fourth quarter the Holsteins would intercept the ball on their own 23 yard line and return it 10 yards to the 33. Two long pass plays would get the Holsteins into the end zone again and extend their lead to 28-12.

The next Bulldog possession would be their longest of the game, with time running out they went to air with 7 of their 10 plays being passes. They moved the ball 35 yards but come up short of a touchdown as the game ended.

Once again the Bulldogs played excellent team defense with 12 players having one or more tackles, led by Beau Jeffers with 14 tackles and six players with 5 or more tackles each. Tristen Peterson had the Bulldogs only sack of the game.
