On Oct. 4, Glen Ullin/Hebron Bearcats traveled to Bowman County. The energy in the gym was low, a lot like the temperature outside. This adversely affected our team, who had a lot of trouble with their tip defense and offense. The Bearcats capitalized on this to win the match 3-0. Highlights of the game included improvements in Bulldog serving, as the team kept over 92 percent of the serves in on the opponent’s side. Bulldog passing showed some gains as well, with the team only having 6 passing errors in the match. The game was lost at the net, with the bulldogs racking up 31 hitting errors over 3 sets and failing to dig the tip well.

Individually, we had shining moments amongst the team. Josie Smyle put up 9 assists and played some of her best defense of the season. Leslie Roen stepped up to set several times at front right and played an aggressive blocking game. Lindsey Dix had a big serving game, serving 12 times with only 1 error, resulting in 6 points for the Bulldogs while she was serving. Lindsey Narum had one of her biggest hitting nights of the season, hitting an amazing 0.429 hit percentage, with 4 kills and only 1 error out of 7 attempts. Sky Ruggles, the libero, stepped her passing game up even more, with 2.49 passing rate, where 3.00 is perfect passes 100 percent of the time.

Junior Cassidy Walby had a good defensive night, digging 4 of 9 times and passing a 2.13, the second leading passer on the team. Sophomore Ellie Stafford led the team at the net, with 8 kills and 4 blocks. Kaylee Septon did a great job with setting and defense, putting up a 2.06 passing rate and 8 assists. Kelsie Goodshield received the serve well and had 3 kills. Maury Burke also played well on serve receive and continues to improve her back row play.

The Bulldogs head to Mott on Thursday, October 6, and to Beach on Saturday Oct. 8 for a tournament, before returning home to play Beach in a regional game on Tuesday, Oct. 11.

Jennifer Holecek is the volleyball heach coach for Bowman County.
