Duane David Brown

Duane David Brown was born September 11, 1934, in Bowman, North Dakota to Herbert and Louise (Smith) Brown. He was the second child of the Brown family and has eight siblings including Marlene (Mrnak), Sharon (Bliss), Carol (Ziebarth), Gary, Verlin, Shirley (Clemmons), Jeanette (Nelson) and Marvin.

Duane grew up on the family farm and attended school in Scranton, ND. Upon graduation in 1952, he continued his education at Wartburg College, Waverly IA. After graduating from Wartburg College with a degree in English, he enrolled at Wartburg Seminary in Dubuque, IA with plans to pursue a life in the ministry. After a few semesters at Seminary, he realized that the ministry was not his calling and went on to be an English teacher at Scranton, ND, Waubun, MN, Perham, MN, Kalispell, MT and New London-Spicer, MN. During the early part of his teaching career, he was able to complete a master’s degree in English from Moorhead State College. Duane was the head wrestling coach at Perham and New London, MN.

Duane married Sharon Ann Marie Grove on August 30, 1963. They have three children including Eric, Kyle, and Marna.

Duane was a long-time member of Peace Lutheran Church where he served on the church council and helped with the Sunday School program. Duane loved to travel and while a high school teacher at New London, he was selected for two Fulbright exchange teacher positions which allowed him to work and live in England (Didsbury) and Denmark (Greve). His great joys in life included his family, time with friends and colleagues at the coffee shop, the Twins, and a good book.

Duane is survived by his wife, Sharon, children-Eric (Diane) of Canyon Lake, TX, Kyle (Elizabeth) of McAllen, TX and son-in-law, Erik Anthonisen of Fergus Falls, MN. He was enormously proud to be Grandpa (Poppie) to Austin, Martin, Jenna, Anders, and Siri.

He was preceded in death by his cherished daughter, Marna and his parents, Herbert and Louise Brown. Services are entrusted to Johnson Funeral Home in New London, MN. www.hafh.org

His funeral service will be 10:30 am Saturday, February 29, 2020, at Peace Lutheran Church in New London. Burial will be at Lebanon Cemetery in New London. A visitation will be held on Friday, from 5-7:00 pm at Peace Lutheran Church in New London and continue one hour prior to the service at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred for designation at a later date.
