Joanne Lorge, 90, of Bowman, ND, passed away on April 22, 2020 at the Southwest Healthcare Medical Center in Bowman.

Joanne was born to Max and Mabel Bender in New England, ND on Dec. 16, 1929. Shortly after, the family moved ten miles south of New England to the Alfred Strehlow farm in Strehlow Township. Joanne grew up here with her younger brother, Ronald. Their grandfather Alfred Strehlow lived with them. Growing up Joanne’s best friend Marvis lived just down the road. They were friends growing up, and later they both married men from Slope County. Joanne graduated from New England High School in May 1947. After high school, she worked at the Red Owl grocery store for about a year. Joanne went to Dickinson College for a summer taking a secretary course, but never pursued that career. Joanne then went to Rochester, MN to work for her cousin at the Three Sister’s clothing store. She returned home to attend college for another summer to become a teacher, and taught school until Christmas. She returned to New England, ND where she met Gene Lorge. Gene and Joanne were married on Oct. 9, 1953. They farmed and ranched southwest of Amidon. They raised five children Patrick, Michael, Janel, Dale and Amy. For two years, during the school year Joanne lived with the kids in New England until Patrick and Michael graduated from high school. During this time, Joanne worked at Zueger’s Drug store. To be closer to Gene, the family moved to Bowman where Janel, Dale and Amy graduated from high school. For 15 years Joanne worked at Bennett Drug store, and retired in 1997 to help care for her mother. In 2010 Joanne moved to Bismarck to be closer to her grand children. In 2019 due to failing health, Joanne returned to Bowman to the Southwest Healthcare nursing home. Joanne enjoyed sewing, baking, camping, reading, playing cards, and especially spending time with family and friends.

She is survived by her son Patrick (Denise) Lorge of Amidon, son Michael (Carolyn) of Black Hawk, SD, son-in-law Terrance Freih of Bowman, son Dale Lorge of Billings, MT, daughter Amy (Keven) Oler of Bismarck, ND.
