John Marvin Braaten, was born on Dec. 11, 1927 at Mrs. Lukes’ house in Bowman to John and Marie (Soreide) Braaten. His parents both came from Norway and Marvin was proud of his Norwegian heritage. He was baptized and confirmed at Bethany Lutheran Church. He was reared on the family farm/ranch south of Rhame and attended Nebo School through eighth grade. He married Patsy McGee on Dec. 17, 1952. They made their home on the John Braaten Farm. Marvin and Patsy raised their four sons (Ron, Rick, Robin and Sheldon) here, instilling his good work ethic to them all.

Marvin worked off the farm for Melvin Miller where he helped move buildings, build roads and dams. He also hauled uranium out of the Cave Hills to Griffin, delivered fuel for Shuck’s Standard Oil, and drove school bus for Morrell McGee, Bill Coutts and Gary Van Daele. He took pride in keeping his school buses exceptionally clean.

Marvin enjoyed reading. He read his daily paper from front to back. The boys looked forward to him reading “Snuffy Smith” in a cartoon voice to them. Marvin loved comedian Red Skeleton and the TV show “All in the Family”. He enjoyed being outside tinkering and fixing things. He also enjoyed snowmobiling, camping, boating, dancing and talking about ‘days gone by’ over a cup of coffee with his friends and neighbors. His barn cats would come on the run when he stepped out his door. He helped his sons with farming and cattle until he was in his 90’s. He was a quiet man but loved to play jokes and was always willing to help his neighbors.
